No, it’s not looking for certain items in a store and being the first group of people to complete all the tasks. It is a biblical form of evangelism that was started by a man named Kevin Dedmon, from Bethel Church in Redding, CA.
Treasure hunting is based on the scripture in Acts 9, where Ananias hears from the Lord and goes out to find what God told him he would see.
“Now there was a disciple at Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias”. And he said, “Here I am, Lord.” And the Lord said to him, “Rise and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas, look for a man of Tarsus named Saul, for behold, he is praying, and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so he may regain his sight.”
What Ananias is doing here in these verses is exactly how Jesus calls us to live and releasing the kingdom of God wherever he goes. He hears the Lord. He obeys God. He sees a miracle. It’s that simple.
So how do we develop that in our daily lives? That is where treasure hunting comes in. It’s a practice of hearing God speak to you, going out to finding what he told you you’d find and seeing miracles. It’s really that easy. The goal of treasure hunting is to learn to hear God in your day-to-day, so you don’t have to “treasure hunt” to see miracles, it can be part of your daily walk with God.
For those new to this or that want to run your own treasure hunt, here are some basic instructions.
1. Download the treasure map, here.
2. Gather together with people who want to pray and go out and see miracles.
3. Worship and posture your heart to hear God’s voice.
4. Write down everything you hear in the categories on the treasure map. Unusual is anything that doesn’t fit in the other categories.
5. Go to the locations you heard and look for the clues God gave you.
6. Pray and see miracles happen.
